The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) took a significant step forward on Sunday, October 5, 2025, as FIFA referee Reverend John Tope Ojeleye from the Lagos State Referees Council showcased his expertise in the highly anticipated match between Kwara United FC and Abia Warriors FC.

The match, Day 7 of the 2025/2026 NPFL season, saw Abia Warriors emerge victorious with a 1-0 win far away from home

The decisive moment came in the 50th minute when Reverend Ojeleye awarded a penalty to Abia Warriors after a Kwara United defender committed a handball offense inside the 18-yard box.The penalty was skillfully converted by Jersey No.20 Emeka Obioma.

Throughout the match, Reverend Ojeleye demonstrated exceptional composure & accuracy in his decision-making, earning widespread acclaim for his performance. 

His ability to manage the game effectively and uphold the rules of the game has set a high standard for other referees to follow.

In terms of discipline, Kwara United's Jimoh Wasiu and two other Abia Warriors' players, Casinura Azuguille & Suraju Lawal, were cautioned

The match was a testament to the progress being made in Nigerian football,with the NPFL's commitment to promoting a culture of fairness & discipline yielding positive results.

 Elegbeleye, Chairman of the NPFL,has been championing efforts to change the league's narrative, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to the rules without compromise.
