AKINOLA SUNDAY SET CROWNED PEACE CUP 2026 CHAMPIONS.
Akinola Sunday Set have emerged champions of the 6th edition of the Peace Cup after defeating Kukushaw FC 1–0 in the grand finale played on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
The final, held at the Akinola Playing Ground in Akinola Community, Aboru, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos State, kicked off at 3:00 p.m. under cold weather, with a large crowd turning out to support both teams.
Akinola Sunday Set started brightly and came close to taking an early lead through striker Pelumi Ajani. However, Kukushaw FC goalkeeper Sodiq Akorede produced a brilliant double save within the opening three minutes to keep the scoreline goalless.
Both sides continued to search for the breakthrough, but neither could find the back of the net before the end of the first half.
The decisive moment came midway through the second half when Akinola Sunday Set midfielder Emmanuel Kehinde fired home to give his side the lead.
Kehinde’s strike proved to be the only goal of the encounter as Akinola Sunday Set held on to secure the Peace Cup title.
Following his impressive performance, Kehinde was named Man of the Match by the tournament organisers.
The final also attracted notable football personalities, including Ikorodu City FC President Sanmi Doherty and Sporting Lagos FC Chairman Godwin Enakhena, whose presence was greeted with loud applause and a standing ovation from the crowd.
Kukushaw FC received the runners-up trophy and a cash prize of ₦500,000, presented by Enakhena.
The champions, Akinola Sunday Set, received the winners’ trophy from Doherty, while Alhaji Fatai Osha presented the team with the ₦1,000,000 grand prize.
Speaking after the match, Ikorodu City FC President Sanmi Doherty stressed the importance of supporting grassroots football and developing young talents.
“We need to encourage grassroots football and develop our talent in the community,” Doherty said.
He also praised the impressive fan turnout, noting that grassroots football requires greater support because it serves as the foundation for developing professional footballers.
President of Ikorodu City Sanmi Doherty advised young players to remain committed to their training, get enough rest and reduce the time they spend on their phones.
Sporting Lagos FC Chairman Godwin Enakhena also praised the quality of the tournament and the peaceful atmosphere at the venue.
“I didn’t want the match to come to an end. I wanted it to continue, but it had to come to an end and the champion has emerged. I will be here next year and also support the tournament in my own little way,” Enakhena said.
Commenting on the large turnout, Enakhena said the peaceful atmosphere demonstrated the positive impact grassroots football can have on communities.
“Look at the crowd, everywhere is peaceful, no fight. If you don’t play grassroots football or encourage it, then where do we get the future professionals? You can see that everybody is happy and you can see the excitement from the crowd,” he said.
He called for more grassroots competitions across Nigeria, stressing that football can promote unity and peace in communities.
The victory marks Akinola Sunday Set as champions of the 6th edition of the Peace Cup, while Kukushaw FC finished as runners-up.
